The Students for Humanity Review

The coronavirus pandemic is unlike anything we have experienced in our lifetime. Every day we are bombarded with an endless stream of coronavirus news, making us feel like each day was worse than the one before. Businesses have closed, public gatherings are banned, and all of our plans have been postponed. In these times, we are all faced with our own challenges. Some are struggling with mental health, due to confinement, some have lost their jobs, and many, our heroes on the frontline, are risking their lives every day to save others. However, while we might be and feel isolated from one another, it is together that we are braving the night, and as Victor Hugo once wrote, “even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise.”

“Udine, straniero minaccia poliziotti in questura”, “Salerno, straniero aggredisce medici e distrugge l’ambulanza”, sono i titoli notizie comparse nei primi mesi del nuovo anno, possono sembrare un incipit come un altro, fornendo informazioni essenziali su luogo e fatto, eppure, ad un più attento sguardo c’è un’indicazione superflua: la parola “straniero”. 

Quale valore aggiunto fornisce alla notizia il fatto che l’autore fosse “straniero”? Sarebbe stato, forse, meno grave se l’autore di un’aggressione, di uno stupro fosse stato italiano? Nel nostro codice penale l’essere di nazionalità estera non costituisce un’aggravante alla commissione di un reato; la criminalità è e deve restare scevra da considerazioni etniche.

L’indicazione è funzionale, piuttosto, a suffragare lo stigma dello stranie...
