The Students for Humanity Review

October 29, 2019

TThe exercise of freedom of expression is a critical measure of a pluralistic society as it allows individuals to impart and access ideally unbiased informations, as well as it provides for critical voices that keep the government in check. Its significance is evident in periods of impetus for the exercise of the freedom of expression that cumulate in popular demonstrations that occur in societies with the high levels of oppression. People share information on their preferred social networks and hopefully encourage others to participate in the collective calls for freedoms - this courage is sometimes very needed, particularly in the societies in which the political participation in form of protests is not only prohibited by law, but also rewarded with police beatings, imprisonment without...

Almost thirty years have gone by since the fall of the Berlin Wall. This infamous wonder of the world has become a planetary metaphor for divisiveness and lack of freedom.

Unfortunately, many new walls have risen, since the collapse of the Berlin Wall. They have been erected to combat immigration, military conflicts, drug-trafficking, terrorists, or simply to conceal misery. Walls, gates, and fences, capped with barbed wire, have been multiplying around the world, since the beginning of the 21st century. The Cold War was replaced by a War on Terror, with borders becoming the frequent response to a world filled with conflicts. There are notorious ones, such as Israel’s Separation Border with the West Bank, as well as others, nearly invisible to the international community, such as the Morocc...

Throughout time, art has been the mean by which societies express their philosophy, their cosmovision and, more importantly, their reality. In modern times, the evolution of art has created new forms of expression, such as street art. Once seen as a form of rebellion and social disobedience, street art has evolved to become an aspect of our daily lives, present almost everywhere we go and providing a connotative perspective of the reality surrounding us. In Latin America, where the artistic schools don’t have as much tradition as its European counterparts, these new artistic expressions, specially graffiti and street art, have become more and more present in cities and towns all across the region. By taking a look into some of these works, we don’t only see shapes and colors, but also the...

WHO bare data about substance abuse showed worrying numbers: 31 million people worldwide having any drug use disorder, 11 million injecting drugs. Data are scaring per se, but even more alarming when linked to the implications of such disorders: communicable diseases such as HIV and hepatitis C, closely related to the use of injectable drugs, show extremely high numbers at the global level, with 1.3 million of drug addicted people suffering from HIV, 5.5 million from hepatitis C and 1 million from both diseases.

Italy does not represent an exception to this trend: according to the Ministry of the Interior statistics, Italy is the third and forth UE member for cocaine and cannabis abuse, respectively. The main discriminant is the age of addicted: while 1 out of 5 Italian youths (i.e. between...

Inoltre,...

On 15th March 2019, the world was faced with yet another threat of hate and division. During an ordinary Friday Prayer at the Al Noor Mosque in Christchurch (New Zealand), a gunman live-streamed footage of his atrocious attack that later continued at the nearby Lindwood Islamic Centre. The man, described by the media as a white suprematist and extremist planned and publicly revealed these two consecutive shootings, storming into a peaceful place of worship where 50 people were killed and 50 others were severely injured.

The unprecedented event was immediately acknowledged as a clear criminal and terrorist attack, perpetrated in the name of a hatred and unjustifiable violence.

In the aftermath of the Christchurch mosque attacks, many have voiced their opinions on matters of racism, extremism,...

“The Notre Dame is burning!”, “Notre Dame is on fire!”, “Flames threaten the 850-year-old historical French cathedral”. Bad news travel fast and sooner or later the world knew that the Notre Dame de Paris had caught fire, with the most prevalent theory being that it was an accident during renovation works that caused the blaze.

Within a matter of days, the French president promises that the monument will be restored within a 5-year period and at the same time donations start flooding to fund the rebuilding of Notre Dame. Fundraising websites, campaigns and other initiatives are carried out and the global community is taking action, with individuals contributing as much as they can. What is astonishing though, is that in less than a day after the fire, a handful of France’s  billionaires don...
