Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s words crack the Royal Family

The journey of a romance that started in 2016 between Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex and Meghan Markle, now the Duchess, which would later transform into a marriage, has always raised polemics and ambiguo

us opinions among the Royal British family members and the British population. It was believed that the problems between the Royal family and the Duke and Duchess where due to her background of acting and not of royalty. Nevertheless, five years after the start of this turmoil, a new truth that everyone refuses to believe has come to surface.

There have always been problems among the couple and the coverage of news by the British media, but the admitted truths during an interview with Oprah Winfrey seem to have deeper roots than that. During the two-hour interview, among other topics discussed, the couple made some serious accusations towards a member of the Royal Family about racism. Although both Meghan and Harry acknowledge the fact that they were supported by the Queen throughout their journey, they admit there were concerns about the colour of their then-unborn son, Archie, from one of the members of the Royal Family. While they claim it was neither Queen Elizabeth II nor Prince Philip, the identity of the person who brought about the misery and difficulty that the couple had to go through, remains unknown. Meghan revealed she was suffering a lot while living the royal life and pursuing her duties as Duchess, which led to her even considering suicide.

As if the racism accusation was not enough, Markle also divulged that she had requested help and assistance from the Human Resources department of the Royal Family, who refused to aid her throughout these difficult times with the excuse that she was not an employee.

These fiery allegations of racism coming from within the Royal family are regarded as the worst Royal crisis since the 1936 abdication of Edward VIII, and for a variety of reasons. First, issues of racism in the 21st century are rather intolerable and excruciating as they burden the person they are directed to with a lot of pain, suffering and sadness. It should be widely recognized and accepted that everyone should be treated in the same way and specifically there should be no uneasiness transpiring from the Royal Family, the Head of the Commonwealth. This leads us to the second argument, the fact that concerns materialized from some of the member nations of the Commonwealth that found this unveiling news very disturbing and insulting to their people. For instance, ex-Australian Prime Minister as well as journalists and politicians in Canada, Uganda, Jamaica, Barbados, and India, have rightly raised the question of whether they still wish to be affiliated with the Royal Family.

Despite the Queen’s general reluctancy to comment on private family issues, and her current difficult situation with Prince Philip being hospitalized, a statement was released on behalf of the Queen after many emergency talks and meetings to face the crisis: "The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan. The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately. Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members."

The whole interview and the declarations of Prince Harry and Meghan have spurred a battle of opinions, an explosive clash of morality and loyalty to the Queen. Racism, suicidal thoughts and even the miscarriage, revealed earlier by the Duchess, are issues that should be addressed more often and that is why Meghan was praised for having the courage to speak about them in public, even though she knew the extent of judgmentalism she would receive. The British Crown was unexpectedly hit by a tornado that seems to have caused serious damage to its reputation and power. The lingering question amidst these shocking events is: will the Queen be able to dissolve the dark cloud that lingers above her family and the British monarchy and regain her position after these accusations?
